![]() ![]() I’m grateful that Suleika agreed to chat with me this week, via email, a few days after leaving the hospital. It was devastating news for Suleika and all of those who love her, but as usual she has continued to focus her energy on gratitude, connection and the healing powers of creativity. In December, Suleika shared with those readers that the leukemia had returned. She’s also nearing the two-year anniversary of her newsletter, The Isolation Journals, which offers advice, essays and writing prompts to a community of more than 100,000 people. She lives with her longtime partner, the musician Jon Batiste, whom she first met when she was 13 at band camp in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Suleika is now 33 and the best-selling author of “ Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted,” which just came out in paperback. The column captivated readers for more than two years, and a video series by the same name was honored with an Emmy Award in 2013. ![]() In 2012, I asked a young writer named Suleika Jaouad to write the weekly “Life, Interrupted” column for The Times, about living with cancer in her early 20s after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of leukemia. ![]() ![]() ![]() He was unable to cry for years after his mother’s death, despite his public outpour of grief. We learn about the trauma this caused a young Prince Harry. The first focuses on his childhood: most famously the loss of his mother Diana in 1997 when he was 12. There are three core sections of the book. ![]() Harry explains that the book is his attempt to explain to his family, and the world, why he felt he had to leave his royal duties. The media treatment of Harry is linked to his status as a spare because he provided distractions so members of the family look good in comparison. The core themes of the book are the press and mental health. The title refers to the royal tradition of having an heir to the throne, and a ‘spare.’ The much anticipated memoir, Spare by Prince Harry the Duke of Sussex, became the fastest selling non-fiction book in the UK since records began. ![]() ![]() ![]() The use of dialect is not overly intrusive (compare "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and a host of grade-B writings from the period up through the 1950s). ![]() Style: Chopin writes smoothly and easily, with succulent descriptive passages. I suggest that it was considered unacceptable as much for for its denigration of the roles of wife and mother (at that time) as for its restrained sensuality and "coded" adultery, although I'm sure Eulalie Mackecknie Shinn would have disapproved of the book. The novel "The Awakening" might better be termed "The Abandonment." ![]() The sentiments exhibited are conventional romances, although with wit and some insight. Substance: The short stories are entertaining, in the 19th century style, with interesting views of the Louisiana Creole milieu. ![]() ![]() ![]() This fun story is the first of a trilogy, along with Runaway Ralph and Ralph S. The Mouse and the Motorcycle is perfect for independent reading or for shared reading at home or in a classroom. This timeless classic now features a foreword written by New York Times bestselling author Kate DiCamillo, as well as an exclusive interview with Beverly Cleary herself. ![]() Whether dodging a rowdy terrier or keeping his nosy cousins away from his new wheels, Ralph has a lot going on! And with a pal like Keith always looking out for him, there's nothing this little mouse can't handle. But with all this freedom (and speed!) come a lot of obstacles. In this imaginative adventure from Newbery Medal–winning author Beverly Cleary, a young mouse named Ralph is thrown into a world of excitement when a boy and his shiny toy motorcycle check in to the Mountain View Inn. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now, with the 150 th anniversary of the end of the Civil War upon us, TIME-LIFE The Civil War in 500 Photographs will be an indispensable guide to a nation-changing era and the military, social, economic, and political forces that shaped it. ![]() The name TIME-LIFE has become synonymous with providing readers with a deeper understanding of subjects and world events that matter to us all.
